Welcome to County Durham

Nestled in the heart of North East England, County Durham is a place of rich heritage, dramatic landscapes, and vibrant communities. From the rolling hills of the Durham Dales to the historic streets of Durham City, the region offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural depth, and industrial legacy. Our base in Bishop Auckland sits at the crossroads of tradition and transformation—surrounded by ancient castles, sweeping countryside, and a growing network of creative and community-led initiatives. It’s a place where storytelling thrives, where art and history meet, and where local pride runs deep. Whether you're drawn by the rugged charm of the Pennines, the serenity of woodland waterfalls, or the spirit of regeneration shaping towns like ours, County Durham invites you to explore, connect, and be inspired.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Durham Cathedral is celebrated for its Romanesque design, rib-vaulted ceilings, and commanding presence. Whether glimpsed from the viaduct or explored up close, its architecture leaves a lasting impression.

Today, it remains an active place of worship and a centre for community, music, and education. Visitors can attend services, climb the central tower for panoramic views, or simply sit in quiet awe beneath its soaring arches.

Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral stands as one of England’s most iconic landmarks—a masterpiece of Norman architecture and a beacon of spiritual and cultural heritage.

Towering above the River Wear, the cathedral has watched over the city for nearly a thousand years. Built between 1093 and 1133, it was originally a shrine to St. Cuthbert, whose remains still lie behind the High Altar. It also houses the tomb of The Venerable Bede, one of England’s greatest scholars, making it a site of pilgrimage, reflection, and learning.
